Day Seven: Devils Tower, Wyoming

Another stop for scrumptious pastries -- this time, white chocolate/cherry scones and caramel rolls -- at the diner on Main Street, then back on the I-90. Direction, due west, destination, Devils Tower, located in northeastern Wyoming. It's where the aliens gave Richard Dreyfuss a lift in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but this star rock has been around a bit longer than the movies. We did crank up the theme to Close Encounters as we drew near, but our choice of music did not incite any alien abductions. That we remember.

Devils Tower -- there's no apostrophe, as it is a tower for all devils, I suppose -- was one of the most magical experiences of all. We took the 45-minute hike around the base and savored some quality moments listening to the wind in the pines.

Chris feels the power of the Tower:

Saturn (ours) orbits Devils Tower:

There's a sprawling prairie dog village at the base of Devils Tower. Chris hypothesized that the prairie dogs all don little hooded robes and encircle the tower nightly, where they join paws, baying and swaying before the monolith's immense majesty. My opinion? Probably.
