The mere name gives me a thrill. We love the old West, and we loved the eponymous show. We're root 'em toot 'em down to our toes, so driving into this gun-slinger haven was damn exciting. I can say "damn" because this is Deadwood, after all. I may get even more vulgar if the spirit takes me. But it probably won't.
Quick background: Deadwood was ailing for decades. In the 1980s, local government voted to restore Vegas-style gambling. Not a stretch; Deadwood, after all, was a town where playing cards was once a way of life. The gambling gamble saved the town and Deadwood now feels a bit like a mini Vegas. The buildings are vintage, the saloons are appropriately old-timey, but the sound of the modern slots are constant.
For fans of the show: We stayed at the Bullock, Deadwood's oldest hotel.
